View Full Version : Team Run

There seems to be a lot of pissing and moaning regarding finding a location for some winter fitness training as well as paying for a facility. Due to this, I would like to make the suggestion that the team meet once a week for a group run. I know that to many of you, running is a bad thing, but if you approach running in the right way it can actually be enjoyable as well as very beneficial to your performance on the pitch. My ideas on the subject are outlined below:
We could meet once per week, at Ault Park at 6:00 PM on Thursday’s prior to bar practice. From Ault we could do a group run through Mt. Lookout/Hyde Park/Walnut Hills etc.
Depending on who shows up, we may or may not want to split up into groups based on fitness levels and or positions.
As a group or groups we could decide on the route and distance that we want to run. For example, maybe the backs and loose forwards could do a 5-6 miler and the tight 5 could do a 3 miler. As our fitness levels increase, so could our intensity and/or distances.
Being a former Mt. Lookout resident, and a regular runner, I know firsthand that one of the big benefits of running in Mt. Lookout is that there are some very big hills. If we work hard on the hills take it easy on the flat parts of the course I guarantee you that you will know that you did a good workout.
Just to reiterate, some of the benefits of this idea are:
It is free!
It will help increase your fitness levels (especially in the second half).
It can be a team building experience
Work up a good thirst for Bar Practice!!
You get drunker quicker when you are partially dehydrated!!!
Please keep in mind that none of the suggestions above are written in stone, and are definitely open for discussion. Let me know what you think.
Brian,
Thanks for a well thought out suggestion. I am up for it. Anyone else? Shall we start next week?

I think it's a good idea. I don't know if I can run 5 miles in the same day, but I will give it a shot.

I'm in - not this week though. I have to gorge myself on a free dinner.

It sounds good to me. I think anyone on our team can do this (aside from injuries that prevent running for long periods of time on hard surfaces). The key is to run at your own pace. Over days progressively try to run it a little faster. Remember in a game you're running more than 5 miles anyway and you survive that.

I think I probably have one of those nebulous injuries Curt was referring to. I have been told by medical professionals that the only therapy for this condition is to spend lots of time with a bar stool compressed against the ass, or was that vice versa?:p

That's weird. I too have been afflicted, but even though it's my legs and feet that are afflicted, my message therapist has told me, in addition to the bar stool thing, to do multiple hand compressions around a glass item that holds in the neighborhood of one pint. Then she babbled something about a pint weighing 1.04 pounds, bigger biceps, I don't know, I stopped listening when she mentioned the prescription for Perkaset.........

Paul,
My massage therapist told me something different from yours. Because this affliction comes after years of sitting on stools, she said the more that I begin to exercise my arms I have to begin to excercise my legs too. I am not supposed to take it too hard but just to get up and streach my legs and release some of the pressure once in a while. I am not supposed to move more that 20 feet and walk back and get right back on the stool to my arm excersizes...but hey, its a start.
I don't have a humorous or witty reply to this thread, but I would like to put in my 3 cents worth and say that I am all for the running idea. I even ran (jogged slowly) 2 miles a week ago and didn't throw up afterwards, so I am holding out hope that I can keep up with the packies. Unless we have a category for cripples-who-just-don't-know-when-to-quit?

Lisa, You know you've got problems when you're worried about keeping up with the pack!!!
(Pauly, I was wondering why you had a "message therapist" I have found your messages to be quite acceptable, free of typos for the most part, and all around enjoyable...)

Please respond on the board or to me directly if you plan to meet for a run on Thursday 12/6/01 @ 6:00 PM.
If we have enough people to make it worthwhile, we will meet at the parking lot next to the practice field in Ault Park. We can run the Reggae Run 5K course once or twice.
Thanks,
Brian

Toby:
Since it looks like only you and me need to get a run in, lets cancel the group run for this week, and try again next Thursday.

Brownie:
I am still going to run, just no real need for me to drive cross town if few others are interested. However, if Mike Brown wants to show up and make a real attempt at keeping the pace, I would love to do a nice hilly 10K with him.

Brian

Oh, when I said "Pussies", what I meant was that I have to take care of some sick cats, so I can't make it to go run. But really, thanks for thinking of me.

I am going to try this once more. Is anybody up for a run on Thursday night before bar practice? We will meet at Ault Park @ 6:00 PM.
Please email me back or respond to the forum if you are up for it.
Thanks,
Brian
PS - Mike Brown, if your pussy is feeling better, feel free to meet us.

Since there seems to be little to no interest in the "team fitness run" concept, it is canceled for tonight, as well as thereafter.

So is this team run thing still going on before bar practices? Im done with school for the year and dont have to bartend on thursdays so maybe I'd be up for it, if not the run then the drinking is good!
Bill (or Trojan for Pony and Pauly)
I would go this thurs if anyone else still is. Although I happen to know I will not last 5K - or even close. On the treadmill 3 miles just about kills me, and takes me a half an hour! I SUCK!!!
