The Cincinnati U-19 Rugby League got off to a great start last Sunday. 4 clubs gathered at Brimelow Fields to witness some surprisingly entertaining rugby. The East Side club started off the day vs. the Westside Highlanders. East Side showed better form early with some good work in the backline. This resulted in two well worked tries. Westside responded at the end of the half with a nice pack try consisting of several rucking set pieces. Breakdowns in the backline continued to plague Westside in the second half, allowing East Side to manufacture two tries (one off a stolen line out 20 meters out). Never quitting, however, Westside closed the day out with another fine pack try off of two East Side penalties close to the try zone, thus making the final score 22-10 East Side.

The second match saw a polished North Bend side pretty much dominate Walnut Hills, who were several players short and had to borrow from other clubs. Although Walnut had several standout players, it was easy to tell that there was no cohesiveness. North Bend, however, did well on both ends of the pitch. What stood out was they were the best club at running FORWARD! They did not drift from side to side, as was the tendency of the other clubs. When this reporter left at the half, North Bend was up 6 tries to nil.

All in all a great day for rugby in Cincinnati. There was a good size crown to help support the players, and it created an exciting atmosphere. All the clubs have a long way to go in their development, but the seeds have been sewn!

Please make every effort to attend the matches throughout the season. All games will be played on Sundays beginning at 12:00 noon at Brimelow Fields. Next week is the last set of scrimmages, with real games starting April 21. This will culminate in the City Championships on May 19.
